Halifax Harbour Sighting: 'Hop Mess Monster'

The one and only 'Hop Mess Monster' aka 'Messie' has been spotted near the Hart and Thistle on the Halifax waterfront!

Not to be messed with, 'Messie' as she is affectionately known to locals is a monstrosity of a Triple IPA, the likes of which this country has never seen. A real Imperial Pale Ale brewed with copious amounts of hops and malts clocking in at a deliciously insane 533 calculated IBU's and 11.0% ABV.

We're fully expecting her to rear her ugly head near the middle of May 2010 so stay tuned. Updates to follow.....

Vital Stats:
Gravity - 22.5 P/1.094
IBU's - 100+ (533 calculated)
Hop Rate > 10 lbs/bbl
ABV - 11.0 %
Colour ~ 10 SRM
Malts - Pale Ale, Melanoidin, Crystal 30, Dextrin (CaraPils), Munich

Hops - Magnum, Chinook, Cascade, Sorachi Ace, Simcoe, Citra, Columbus

What exactly is the point here Greg? This just seems like an awful waste of good hops to me.

A real Imperial Pale Ale

Now, just what do you men by that sort of thing? You're not implying that Halifax's other ImPA isn't real, are you? The last time I had one, it was real, all right: real lumpy.

Not that I'm the sort of guy to stir up trouble or anything like that.

Anon:

The point here is to make great beer and have fun with it at the same time. The added bonus is filling an empty void in the local marketplace.

At one point I'm sure the rest of world couldn't figure out wtf the French were doing putting so many onions in soup either.

If Triple IPA hop-bombs aren't your thing then don't drink them. It's that simple.

I am certainly implying that this Imperial Pale Ale is the real deal.

Not slamming other brews but we all know there's a few beers in this country that are somewhat less than the name would lead one to believe.

Anonymous, my name is Bruce Keith and I own the Hart & Thistle. Before this turns into a pro/con bash-fest allow me to tell you exactly what the point is. Brewing beer is an ART form, whether it is practiced at the basement/kitchen level, the mini garage level, the micro, macro or where ever, it's an ART form practiced by people dedicated to making amazing liquid out of water malt yeast and yes hops....glorious hops. At the Hart we serve excellent beer from amazing breweries....this affords us the luxury of having fun with our production. So Anon, when you ask " what is the point?" you are making it.... produce beer that is thought provoking, interesting extreme.....tasty...not to everyone's taste but that's not the point....everyone else is making beer for the masses - we dont need to. When you say "seems like a waste of good hops to me.".... I wonder if you would think Michaelangelo used too much paint?..... Greg has my full support to continue to challenge tastes and play at his ART....we all win in the end.

Excited!

That's the point. I'll be there when this is ready.

I have to come down to Halifax for this. If only I wasn't in Fredericton. :(

As for the point, its to push the limits, its what any artist does with their creations (or at least the good ones), and try new things.

"At one point I'm sure the rest of world couldn't figure out wtf the French were doing putting so many onions in soup either." This is one of the best comments I'v read for awhile. I'll have to remember it for the next time someone questions the reasoning of doing something.

Almost makes me want to come from Toronto! Sounds like quite the beast you have on your hands there.

Look forward to tasting it! Still a ways to go to the A.B.V. of this Tactical Nuclear Penguin from the U.K. http://www.brewdog.com/blog-article.php?id=214

Ummmmmm, yes.

If the beers have got Bruce talking about "art" they may be considered to be subversive, hallucinogenic, bombs of the hop variety. Will the "Hop Mess" be a mess? Stay tuned, beer world.

Any chance that if this is a hit, that some may be bottled?

NASH said...

It will surely be a hit :o

I do a little hand bottling at the pub for... ahem.... testing purposes. As for full-on bottling, that will have to wait until I get a microbrewery open.

Will Hop Mess Monster be shipped to Ontario some day? I am dying to try this and live in Ontario and am praying some day LCBO will stock them on their shelves.
